Hi, I'm Tom. Here's Why I Created Simple Sheets.

It started with a single request.

Then another one.

You’d have thought I invented Microsoft Excel based on the number of requests I was getting from friends to help them with their spreadsheets.

But I did not invent Microsoft Excel.

I worked for Microsoft in their Xbox division—and yes, we used Excel religiously. But as a recent graduate, it wasn’t a focus of my education.

Within a couple of years, I became fluent in Excel and able to solve every issue my friends (and colleagues) sent my way.

I found Excel to be like my friend, Jan—cold at first, hesitant to open up. I wasn’t sure he even liked me at first.

But we spent enough time together and I saw how incredible he was as a person. Sometimes I wish he made it easier for others to see that, too.

That's How I see Microsoft Excel

It’s a tool that is wildly useful, flexible, and powerful, yet difficult for many people to use.

I felt strongly about Excel as a solution for learning and knowledge. 

So I searched the web for resources I could share with friends—starting with Microsoft Excel provided templates.

Needless to say, I was not impressed.

Sure, it was a pre-built spreadsheet. But it had none of the capabilities, functions, or visuals that made me fall deeper in love with Excel.

I continued to explore Excel template options and found hundreds of solutions; none I would trust to hand to a friend.

At that point, I decided to start with one goal in mind: Make Microsoft Excel More Accessible and Dynamic.

So I tried my hand at making a template. Deleted it. Tried again. Deleted it. Tried again.

It took me six different times to come up with a format and style I liked. I shared my initial template with a friend who worked at LG and he fell in love with the concept.

Together, we began building templates; one by one.

We started with templates for broad usage that would support small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Then we went deeper, building more extravagant templates for different business categories.

With each template came hours of research. Some templates came easier than others, but we made it a habit to share completed spreadsheets with experts and actual users. We’d go back and fix them up if it didn’t meet their bar.

Two, templates are customizable. One of my issues with other templates was their inflexibility around changing terms, conditions and organizational standards. We made sure templates are easy to customize, many having a Database sheet for convenience.

Three, templates are designed with dashing visuals. Many of my friends in marketing or management aren’t Excel gurus—so there’s no point of sending them a spreadsheet without high-level information they can understand. Our dashboards are rich with color, dynamic slicers, number boxes, charts, plots and graphs that make your data easy to understand.

Four, we have videos for every template. As part of my initial goal, making Excel accessible could only be done if it helped people with multiple learning styles.
